Swara Bread Basket

The Kenyan women behind these natural woven baskets all learned to weave baskets from their mothers and grandmothers, and practise this traditional craft within a small weaving group in rural Kenya. Basket weaving is portable, sociable and flexible work: these women weave in pockets of time throughout the day and the week, fitting in this reliable work around childcare and domestic duties. Weaving work supplements incomes made from farming, which can be unpredictable in the dry seasons.
